Submission Criteria: Scripts should pass the Bechdel Test

  • Pieces must feature two or more female characters
  • The characters must speak to each other, and
  • They must speak to each other about something other than a man. (men can be mentioned, just not exclusively)

This year we are accepting submissions for full-length pieces, workshop readings and cabaret pieces. Work may have been previously produced, but not published.

Full-length pieces: A new work that has already had prior development. Running time must be between 1 hour and 1.5 hours.

Workshop readings: If you have a new piece in development and would like the opportunity to hear it read aloud, please submit it under the category “workshop readings”.

Cabaret pieces: Pieces must be 5-10 mins in length. Past years’ submissions to the GGW Cabaret have included physical theatre, clown, drama, puppetry, song, comedy, dance, sketch comedy, mask, rhythm gymnastics etc. Submitted pieces may be taken from a longer work. However, please do not send a full-length script.

For all categories: Please submit a copy of the script and include the name of the piece, a 200-300 word synopsis, the number and gender of characters & performers required, and any relevant development or production history. Please tell us why you think the work fits the mandate of the GGW festival and what your goals for the piece are. If you are submitting a collective creation please include the names of all collaborators.

*We encourage, if not challenge male playwrights to submit. Some of Canada’s best loved female-centric plays (Les Belles-Souers, The Rez Sisters, Marion Bridge) were penned by male playwrights!

SUBMISSION DEADLINE SUNDAY NOVEMBER 30TH

Please send submissions electronically  to Jacqueline Russell, Artistic Director

“When people say to me, ‘Why are you so good at writing at women?’ I say, ‘Why isn’t everybody?’ Obviously there are differences between men and women – that’s what makes it all fun. But we’re all people. There’s a lot of good writers who are very humanist, but still manage to kind of skip fifty-five per cent of the race. And I just don’t get that. Not to be able to write an entire gender? To me, the question isn’t how do you do it? It’s how can you possibly avoid doing it?”
